Lo Finest Radio: History And Radio Shows Archive

Aural Innovations banner

Aural Innovations was a magazine and website on space rock and related genres, offering reviews, interviews, and general articles. It ran from 1998 to January 2016. The website is no longer active, and all articles are being imported into DPRP, to keep everything available for everyone. Read Aural Innovations — A Brief History, written by AI founder Jerry Kranitz.

Jerry Kranitz

Shortly after transitioning Aural Innovations from print format to webzine in 2000, I launched my Aural Innovations Space Rock Radio show. I believe the term podcast was still some years away.

As time went on, I began hosting shows created by friends in the music network, the longest running of which was Lo Finest, produced by Charles Rice Goff III. Charles began home recording his uniquely creative brand of experimental music and audio art in the late 1970s and continues concocting a wonderfully bizarre array of audio and video oddities to this day. Charles has recorded under his own name, as a member of various bands, and has been a serial collaborator with homemade musicians around the world.

The debut Lo Finest show went online May 22, 2005, featuring a stellar collection of luminaries from the 1980s-1990s homemade music/cassette culture network. Over the next decade Charles would produce a total of forty shows, showcasing a constellation of creative forces of nature in the experimental music realm. Charles did some interesting theme shows. Show #30 was titled 'Feminine Influences', putting the spotlight on some of experimental music's gifted female artists. One of his most fun shows was #21, which consisted of homemade musicians who recorded creatively wacky Christmas songs. The granddaddy of them all, however, was show #18, a 6-hour behemoth that featured lengthy works rarely broadcast in their entirety.

Taken as a whole, the forty Lo Finest shows stand as important historical documents. Other than my own flagship space rock show, Lo Finest is the one I was most proud to host at Aural Innovations.

Lo Finest was a program dedicated to the appreciation of homemade recordings that were made and distributed on cassette tapes during the 1980s and 90s, hosted by veteran home recording artist Charles Rice Goff III. Charles produced 40 Lo Finest shows between 2005 and 2015.

Thousands of sonic artists were cranking out cassettes all over the world during the 80s and 90s. The whole cassette explosion took place long before people had home computers, the internet, email, mp3s, and all that. People found out about home-tapers by reading various publications that offered reviews of tapes, by listening to those rare radio broadcasts that would feature home tapes, by sending a letter to a contact address that had been printed on one of the many compilation cassettes that were created and distributed during this period, etc.

Most home-tapers were not approaching their craft as a means to achieving economic success, and this allowed for some incredibly free thinking endeavors to be realized. Trading tapes was common, offering a sort of sonic cultural exchange that had never really been possible before the age of inexpensive home recording technology.

You can contact Charles through his Taped Rugs Productions website.

Lo Finest Show #18: The Huge Home Recordings Special (February 23, 2010)

One of the things about cassette tapes that many home recording artists have taken advantage of is that they run continuously for long periods of time. Lots of avant-garde home recordings contain single compositions that run as long as 30 — 45 minutes. Excerpts from these extended pieces have received airplay, but rarely have the entire pieces been played on broadcast radio or even internet radio shows. So this show will feature several of these recordings all played in their entirety. Settle yourselves in for a six-hour show!

All of these artists and more are included in the show: Zan Hoffman, Dave Prescott, Alain Neffe,Conrad Schnitzler, Chris Phinney (Mental Anguish), Gen Ken Montgomery, Little Fyodor, Agog, Nick, Jeff Surak, Nadine Bal, Mike Hovancsek, John Hajeski, Keith Nicolay, Evan Cantor, Hal McGee, Brian Noring, Lord Litter, Mr. Ebu, Mike Shannon, Carl Howard, Dan Fioretti, C. Goff III.

Lo Finest Show #10: The Deprogramming Center (September 9, 2007)

For its 10th installment, Lo Finest offers up an actual on-air broadcast of the Deprogramming Center from June 15, 1997. The Deprogramming Center was a radio show devoted to home-made recordings from around the world. It was broadcast every Sunday on KAW, a non-FCC licensed radio station which served the Lawrence, Kansas, community in 1997 and 1998. (US Government actions led to the station's demise in 1998).

The program was widely enough publicized that every week the program's host, Swami Loopynanda, would receive several tapes in the mail from artists from all over the world. It's only been ten years since 1997, but the world of home recording has altered considerably since then. The US Census reported in 1997 that fewer than 50 percent of America's households had a computer in them, and only about half of those were hooked up to the internet. There was no inexpensive method of recording CDs in 1997. Home-recorded cassettes were the main medium through which avant-garde and experimental sound artists shared their works.

The program features the following songs in addition to some creative live backing sounds from Gerbil Bliss during its on-air announcements:
