Genesis still inspires Ray Wilson

Ray Wilson Ray Wilson still regards his time in Genesis as a high point of his career – and he’s still inspired by the experience, he’s revealed.

The vocalist continues to use a songwriting method he learned from the band, which they’d been using in the Phil Collins era.

And that’s helped create his new solo album Chasing Rainbows, due out on April 19.

In the video below Wilson explains: “When I was writing with Genesis I learned a new technique. It’s a technique they’d been using for years, even when Phil was the singer in the band.

“Basically we created pieces of music and I’d just ad-lib, improvise, with the headphones on quite loud – and sing the first thing that came into my head.”

The video also includes an impromptu performance of fan favourite The Airport Song, written about life on the road and how it sometimes seems impossible to get home from a tour.

Wilson has recorded a version of Genesis classic Carpet Crawlers with Steve Hackett. It will be released on Hackett’s upcoming album Selection.
