The Roger Waters boycott!

Roger Waters Thirty years after the release of Pink Floyd‘s ‘The Final Cut,’ which focused on the early-1980s conflict over the Falkland Islands, Roger Waters is still involved with world politics. These days, he’s calling for a South African apartheid-style musical boycott of Israel.

Speaking to the Electronic Intifada, Waters decried to the Israelis’ occupation of West Bank and Gaza areas. “They are running riot,” the Pink Floyd co-founder says. “And it seems unlikely that running over there and playing the violin will have any lasting effect.”

In perhaps the most successful movement of its kind, the United Nations drafted a 1980 resolution establishing a cultural boycott of South Africa, citing its practice of government-sanctioned racial segregation — and, ultimately, the apartheid system was abolished in 1994.

Waters started lobbying for a similar boycott against Israel after a trip to the West Bank in 2006, and even spray painted a lyric from Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) on the occupied area’s barrier: “We don’t need no thought control.” He also serves as a juror on the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, which asserts that Western governments are violating international law in assisting Israel while this occupation continues.

Waters’ campaign has already led to at least one cancellation. He wrote a letter to Stevie Wonder before a performance for the Israeli Defense Forces scheduled for last December, and Wonder pulled out.

One Response to The Roger Waters boycott!

  1. Ned says:

Roger Waters refers to the occupation of the West Bank, which had been part of the country of Jordan. Anyone who is aware of history, knows that there would be no “occupation” if Israel had not been attacked by Jordan in 1967. israel won that territory defending itself. No wall would have been built if Arab terrorists were not sneaking into Israel and killings hunters of Israelis. According to the news blurb above, he accuses Israel of occupying Gaza. Israel pulled out of Gaza years ago. There is no Israeli presence in Gaza.

Perhaps you say, “give peace a chance”and relinquish the West Bank territory. Israel did that in Gaza, and the results was and still is, thousands of missiles fired from Gaza at innocent people in Israel.

Roger Waters, a truly bitter man, has been a hater of Israel since day one. He cannot even get along with his former band mates, yet preaches political idealism.

Apartheid means that there are laws legislated against segments of the population. This is not the case in Israel. Arabs vote and have full voting rights and even serve in the Israeli Knesset. Women, gays, and members of every minority enjoy full rights in Israel. This cannot be said of any Moslem country where Sharia is the law.

Why no political movement against that Mr. Waters? Are you not for Gay Rights and Equal Rights for women? Go play your music in Iran and preach you political beliefs. Lets see if you come home with your head still attached to your body.
